We Bought A Zoo review

We Bought A Zoo

This Easter, be unpredictable, do something crazy and embrace your wild side! Twentieth
Century Fox Home Entertainment presents an inspiring adventure based on a true story of one man who brought a zoo back to life and family back together in WE BOUGHT A ZOO, arriving on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download April 3. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) and starring Matt Damon (Contagion, True Grit), Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Thomas Haden Church (Easy A, Sideways), WE BOUGHT A ZOO is “a sweet-natured tale…that you’ll want to see with your kids” (Liz Braun, Jam! Movies).
Benjamin Mee (Damon) is a Los Angeles newspaper columnist and adventure writer who, as a single father, faces the challenges of raising his two young children. Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house outside the city with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster (Johansson) and her dedicated team. With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo. Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he’s living it in his own backyard.

OUR REVIEW

I loved this movie. I found the characters genuinely entertaining and engaging. There was plenty of comic relief and a good dose of heartfelt drama too. I didn't think the kids would be interested in watching it but since there was nothing objectionable in it I put it on to watch while they were around. Within minutes all three of them were glued to the TV with my husband and I and watched the whole movie with us- start to finish.

I don't think they fully grasped all the family drama - it was a little over their heads for sure- but they enjoyed it anyway.

I asked them what they thought and here is what they told me:

Aiden (age 9): I loved it because it was funny.  I liked the kid that is just a little older than me because he is a really good artist. I liked where he painted a picture that was very evil but cool looking like comic books. The part where he accidentally let the snakes out and then kicked the snake when he was mad was sort of sad but sort of funny too.
Owen (age 8): I really liked it. It was really cool. It was funny. The one big guy with the beard is just hilarious how he gets so mad. And I think that girl likes that boy for sure.
Olivia (age 5): I loved it. I liked all the animals and that the little girl feeded some of the animals and that they lived at the zoo. But I didn't like it when the snakes got out because snakes are scary. But the rest of the am-ni-mals-es were nice to live with.
Overall I would say We Bought a Zoo is a great family friendly movie to watch. And it totally made me laugh AND cry- which is always the sign of a good movie in my books :).

Dove #NourishYourSoul CONTEST

This giveaway is closed. Congratulations to Ksceviour for winning!

I have been a fan of Dove for years- partially because I really love their products but great products are only part of it. I have been in love with Dove ever since I first heard about their Campaign for Real Beauty.

I am passionate about helping girls and women see that they can be beautiful no matter what they look like- beauty is about so much more than our waist size and hair colour!

The first time I saw this video by Dove I knew I had found a brand I could support...

Don't believe me?

I wrote a post on November 25, 2008 about how much I loved that campaign!

I recently wrote a post called Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful about how many of us spend much of our time feeling like crap. We feel like we don't measure up to those around us- we aren't pretty enough, smart enough, capable enough, good enough... we just aren't ENOUGH.

But you know what? That is a lie- we ARE enough.

I want to invite you to come on a journey with me and take a break from all that.

It's time to nourish your soul!

You can win the chance to join Dove (and ME) at the incredible Canyon Ranch health resort and spa in Tuscon, Arizona!

Check out the prize for the Nourish Your Soul contest:

GRAND PRIZE:
There will be four (4) Grand Prizes available to be won consisting of:
  • -  All inclusive hotel accommodation and select meals for 3 nights, 4 days (single occupancy)
between May 25 - 28, 2012 at Canyon Ranch® Hotel and Spa in Tucson, Arizona

    transportation in Tucson, Arizona
  • -  Spa treatments, wellness activities and workshops throughout the duration of the weekend
  • -  Gift Basket upon arrival at Canyon Ranch

I am beyond excited that I was one of only two bloggers invited to accompany the winners on this retreat. I get the distinct privilege of sharing about the retreat and the amazing time we are sure to have at Canyon Ranch and I really can't wait.

The contest is open to CANADIANS ONLY (including Quebec) and is very easy to enter.

Simply head on over to the Dove Facebook page and click on the Skin tab. From there you just fill out the entry form and you are good to go.

The awesome part is that you have the opportunity to give yourself more chances to win simply by sharing the contest with your friends.

Every time a friend enters, you get another entry.

As an added bonus you can keep track of how many entries you have by visiting the contest tab throughout the contest which is an exceptionally cool feature in my opinion.

I would sure love to have a few of you join me on this trip so head on over to the Dove Facebook page and enter the Nourish Your Soul contest right away!

As an added bonus Dove sent me some Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash to try and several to give away!

Only Dove has NutriumMoisture to nourish deeply - and nourishment is better care for your skin vs. moisture alone. Nourishment helps build and maintain beautifully softer smoother skin.

The body wash is lovely to use and certainly a wonderful way to nourish your skin.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO WIN a bottle of Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash?

Leave me a comment here telling me how you nourish your soul!

Extra Entries:

  • share about this giveaway in any way you like and let me know that you did

This giveaway is open to CANADA ONLY and ends April 15th, 2012.

PLEASE NOTE that Dove (or anyone else) is NOT paying me to say nice things about them or their products, nor are they paying me to go on the trip to Canyon Ranch. I do, however, get to go on the trip free of charge in order to share my experience with all of you! My opinions are 100% my own and I do not have to share anything if I don't want to :)

Learning Money with Leo #MoneywithLeo

Pin It This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Andrea for winning.

We all know that it is important to teach kids about money otherwise they grow up thinking there is an endless supply and it has no value.

I'm sure many of us grew up hearing the words "money doesn't grow on trees" but my kids have an added problem... they think money is a little plastic bank card that mom and dad carry around with them. Olivia has a hard time even recognizing the different coins and bills half time because she so rarely sees them. We simply don't carry cash around that often!

When it comes to money our goal with the kids has always been to help them learn to be responsible with it. The trick has been HOW to teach that. Learning Money with Leo has been an excellent tool to help us begin to teach Olivia about money.

About Learning Money with Leo:

Learning Money with Leo has been put together with the input of early childhood education experts and parents, and is designed to:

– Provide kids with an introduction to the concepts and value of money

– Teach kids about earning, saving and spending money

– Help kids develop a foundation of basic money skills that they can build upon in the years to come

Learning Money with Leo features a variety of kid-friendly and interactive games (Match It game, Gather The Coins and Spot The Differences) to teach your children everything from earning, to saving, to spending money. As your child plays each game they’re able to earn coins, which can be used to buy stickers for their very own virtual sticker book.

The application is available for free from iTunes in both English and French.

You can find out more tips on teaching your kids about money at https://www.rbcadvicecentre.com and http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/learning-money-with-leo/index.html

Olivia has loved playing Learning Money with Leo. She needs no encouragement from us to use the app- she chooses it all on her own. The app has a bunch of different games she can play and most of them she can do without any help.

She did need some help reading some of the words occasionally though.

Learning Money with Leo is remarkably kid-friendly and we didn't find any "bugs" or "glitches" which was really nice considering it is a free app!

Olivia loves Learning Money with Leo and I'm sure your kiddo will too!

ENTER to win a RBC VISA gift card valued at $50!

Here are the giveaway details:

Leave a comment telling me how you teach your kids how to understand and responsibly use money!
