The nominations for Mom of the Year are closed and the 8 finalists have been chosen! This was the first year for the Mother of the Year Awards and there were over 16 000 moms nominated. Each of the finalists will receive $10 000 for herself and $10 000 to donate to the charity of her choice. The final winner will receive $100 000 for her charity. All 8 are really incredible women and any one of them would make a fantastic Mom of the Year.
I would encourage you to read all 8 of the finalists stories. I loved reading about each woman and finding out which charity got the $10 000 gift! One woman who stood out to me was Eileen Thiessen. Eileen has spent 46 years mothering special needs children- children that were hers through birth, adoption, and foster parenting. She is also a coach for the Special Olympics and that is the charity she chose to receive the $10 000. What an amazing woman!
As the mother of one special needs child I sometimes find that overwhelming so I find Eileen truly incredible.
After all of the excitement and inspiration that has come from the Mom of the Year Award, it is great to know that the program is going to be an annual celebration of all that Moms do so keep an eye out for the 2013 awards!
