B-Calm review for Autism Awareness Month

Pin It I have talked about my son Aiden and his difficulties dozens of times. Some of the professionals we've seen believe that Aiden has Asperger Syndrome which is an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some of the professionals also believe Aiden has some ADHD tendencies. All of this put together means that Aiden sometimes has real difficulty concentrating at school and loud noise can make him go absolutely nuts.

Recently I was contacted by the amazing folks at B-Calm. They asked if I would be willing to test out the B-Calm AudioSedation system with Aiden and I was absolutely thrilled to do so. We have been researching various ways of helping Aiden succeed in school and in life and the B-Calm system sounded like it would definitely help!

First of all let me give you a little bit of information I got off the B-Calm website:

For many students who cope with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) school can be struggle. Sounds that are typically ignored or unnoticed are often the source of stress, confusion and distraction for students with ADHD and ASD.
That’s why b-Calm has developed AudioSedation. Using familiar headphones and personal audio technology b-Calm is able to make typically distracting and stressful noises unapparent to the wearer! The result is a student better relaxed focused and ready to learn.
Common b-Calm Benefits Include
  • Dramatic drops in behavior outbursts by ASD students
  • Less distracted ADHD student
  • Longer attention span on individual work
  • Better writing clarity and math comprehension

We have found that Aiden responds extremely well to the B-Calm system! It definitely helps to calm him down. When we need Aiden to be calm we simply hand him the headphones and he puts them on willingly... which may not seem like a big deal to some of you but TRUST ME, it is. He has told me several times that he likes to have the system on and will even ask for it on occasion.

Aiden also seems to concentrate better when he uses the B-Calm. Aiden is very easily distracted by noises and whatever is happening around him, especially when he is doing school work. The B-Calm really does seem to help him ignore the distractions.

Over the past couple weeks I have asked Aiden to use the B-Calm when he is frustrated or angry. He puts the headphones on and sits on his bed and it has helped us avoid a few freak outs.

We have sent the system to school with Aiden and according to him he has used it several times. When I asked him what he thought about it he said "I like it". Three little words that say a lot :)

I am thoroughly impressed with the B-Calm system! The B-Calm system is even on sale right now in honour of Autism awareness month!

I subscribed to the b calm website. I would like to win this system for my almost 13 yr old nonverbal son Matthew. I think with the help of his male aide and male teacher he would utilize the headphones at his special ed classroom moreso than at home with me. Plus it is a small class with only 5 of them so maybe the classmates could benefit as well.

This looks really cool. My daughter has high functioning autism and at this point we cant consider mainstreaming her because she can not tune out the noises of the other students. Her constant need to patrol them takes over and she cant attend to her work.

My son is 7 with LFA, and he puts headphones on at school to block out the noises the other boys in his self contained classroom make. This would be a great help to him and calm his aggressive outbursts. Thanks!

Hi
My daughter has been diagnosed. We have been through the gauntlet with therapy groups, counsellors, psycologists, psychiatrists, doctors, nurses and tests to no end. It has been very trying for me and as a single parent heartrendering. It tears me up when I hear couples complain about having to live with a child diagnosed with this at least they have a spouse to lean on I don't even have that.
I would love to have this support for my child at least she could listen to the calming suggestions.
Thanks

I have a twin brother with severe autism, mental retardation and cerebral palsy. I am fortunate enough to be able to take off of work and school to help raise him, and every day that I have with him is a true blessing from God. These kids are angels, and anyone that is willing to give them things to benefit their health and lifestyle is a blessing as well. Good luck with you children, God has truly blessed you. Thank you.

Subscribed to the B-Calm website feed. I would like to win this for my younger son, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder back when he was three. People talk about "it'll get better when your child gets out of the 'Terrible Twos', haven't you heard?" -- but he's been there now for too many years. We know he'll respond to this -- he has memorized so many Country/Western songs it is impressive.

I learned (on the B-Calm website) that they have a constantly evolving mixture of various sound sources, NOT just "white noise", operating to mask some of the ambient "distracting sounds". A useful test: if this will prevent my son from "melting down" when there is a baby crying in the vicinity, we might regain the ability to go out to restaurants!
