Big Bad Scary Owen

Pin It So last night was a CRAZY night in our fine household.

The boys were asleep in their room.

Doug was asleep in our room.

And I, of course, was asleep in Olivia's room because the child refuses to sleep longer than an hour at a time if I am not in her grasp.

I am sleeping somewhat peacefully when around 4 am I am awoken by my husband yelling. Or screaming. Or sounding like he just got the stuffing scared out of him. This was followed quickly by the sound of my son Owen screaming.

I leap out of bed, waking Olivia up in the process, and race out into the hall where I find my husband standing looking dazed and my son standing completely naked and shivering.

I pause for a second wondering what on earth is going on and searching for whatever frightening thing has managed to cause my normally brave husband to scream in fear.

My son realizes I am there and rushes into my arms and says "Daddy yelled at me and scared me and I peed the bed and I didn't mean to and I'm sorry" sob sob sob.

Olivia starts to cry.

Doug looks at me blankly.

I wrap my shivering son in my robe and sit him down and instruct my husband to change my son's sheets. I ignore my daughter who has entered the hall to find out what all the commotion is. I put clean dry jammies on my son and lead him to his freshly made bed.

Aiden sits up and asks if it is time to get up.

I rapidly point out that it is 4 AM and they are NOT allowed to get up until at LEAST 6 AM.

All three children look at me like I am insane for suggesting they go back to sleep. Aiden notices that he is suddenly uncomfortable in his nighttime pull-up... he realizes that he has - for the first time in YEARS- managed to go poo in his sleep. He finds this funny. I do not.

Owen says "Daddy, promise to never do that I again. You scared me and I didn't like it."

Doug reassures Owen that he will never scream at him in the night again. I clean Aiden up and we settle the boys down and leave their room with Olivia in my arms. I head back to her bed to try and convince her it is NOT day time yet.

I pause and say to my now fully awake husband "what on earth happened?"

to which he replies

"I have NO idea. I woke up to myself screaming and I wondered why I was screaming at my son. So I stopped."

At this point we both burst out laughing. Olivia is looking at us like we have gone completely mad.

I say "Owen must have startled you out of sleep when he came to tell us he peed the bed" which only makes Doug laugh harder.

"oh ya, big bad Owen" he says "I can't believe I yelled at my poor son when he came to me for help with his peed bed and jammies!". Then he says "I scared the crap out of Aiden" and we both double over with laughter.

Still laughing we head back to bed. I spend the next 30 minutes giggling and trying to convince Olivia to go back to sleep.

I woke up this morning and promptly started laughing again.

Honestly I think that may have been our craziest night yet. But it has kept me laughing all day so I think it was worth it.

Aiden Goes to the Dentist

Pin It Here is Aiden before- his adult tooth was growing in behind his baby teeth and the baby teeth just would not fall out.

And here is the poor kid after the dentist... with two painful holes in his mouth.
He was a trooper though and did very well. Now I get to play the tooth fairy for the first time ever!

"THIS IS THE WORSTEST DAY EVER!!!" Yelled loudly by Aiden as he stomps down the hall to his room.

Ya. Apparently we live to make his life miserable.

Good to know.

Weekly Winners

Here are some of my favourite pictures I took this week...

My husband is darn cute.
Aiden is obsessed with gum these days. Actually all three of my kids are. I have no idea why.

It is 100% fall here and I think the yellow leaves are lovely.

Our growing pile of leaves in our front yard is completely infested with ladybugs...

My kids are having a ton of fun every day jumping in the pile of leaves- despite the ladybugs!

I am bestowing this auspicious award on my friend Colin of Random Colin because I am just so darn proud of him for participating in a meme I tagged him for which I know was very difficult for him since he tries to avoid memes like the plague!! Plus he has a beautiful family and is apparently going to be in school FOREVER!

Colleen of The Pancake Chronicles takes beautiful pictures. Plus she lives in Yellowknife. And she went to bible college with me when I was 17 and is still nice to me.

Jon is the author of This Side Of Sunday. The picture is of him and his lovely family... who incidently are expecting twins right now. Jon is blogging about an issue near and dear to my heart - the role of women in ministry. If you are interested even remotely in that topic then I encourage you to join in the discussion. Start HERE in order to understand the context.

And finally I would like to give this award to my husband Doug, of the Doug's thoughts and ramblings. I'd like you all to go on over and say hi. I really like his new blog design too.

Thank-you Mrs. Armstrong

Pin It My friend from In the Gutter is hosting a giveaway this month and in order to enter I need to write a thank-you letter to someone who has touched my life.

I have chosen to write to Mrs. Armstrong. She was the teacher's assistant in both of my son's pre-kindergarten classes. Aiden's class first and then Owen's class the following year.

Dear Mrs. Armstrong

I have many reasons to say "thank-you" to you but the biggest reason is that you truly loved my children. No matter how difficult they were you were always waiting in the morning to smile at them and give them a hug.

Aiden hasn't been in your class for well over a year and he still tells me he wishes you were his "teacher". Owen has tried to convince me to allow him to go back to pre-k. You made them feel completely safe and loved.

And you made me feel 100% confident that I could leave my two precious babies with you and they would be well cared for. I never worried about them when they were with you!

I believe that you were a gift from God to our family. You took something I was so afraid of- Aiden starting school- and made it a wonderful experience for all of us. Even when the teacher changed between Aiden and Owen's years I still felt confident that Owen would be just fine- Mrs. Armstrong would be there.

And now that both of my boys have moved on from your classroom I miss you! I will never forget you because you made my sons' very first year of school extraordinary.

When we drive past your house on our way home I always remember when we stopped at your house to trick or treat last Halloween. Owen was so excited to show you his costume. When he saw it was you who opened the door he walked right in and started taking off his shoes to stay and play awhile! My children love you.

You may never know what a gift you have been in my life but I pray that God will so richly bless you for showing such wonderful love to my children and to all the children who pass through your classroom. You have a gift. Thank-you for using it!

I see how hard it is for you to say good bye each year to children you have come to care for so deeply, and yet you continue to love each new class just as much as the one before. And even though you are "just" the teacher's assistant I know that my children never saw you as anything other than one of their teacher's. And I KNOW you contributed just as much to their education as the head teacher's (both of them wonderful ladies as well) did. Never underestimate your contribution to these little lives.

We need more of you in this world.
Thank-you for being who you are and loving my sons for who they are!

Pin It I got called to the school today in the middle of the afternoon because Aiden wouldn't calm down. This was the first time I've been called in the middle of the actual crisis. Usually they just tell me about it afterwards. But I only live 2 minutes away and I was really glad they called me.

When I got there Aiden was practically trying to climb on his poor teacher. He was sobbing and she looked completely frazzled. I felt really bad for her.

I calmed him down, got him colouring with his teacher, and left.

He got grounded from seeing his friends after school as a punishment.

Wanna know the reason he told me he was freaking out?

He wanted to go home and play lego.

Ya. I was not impressed.

Owen was super well behaved today and just generally a lovely child to be around. He has been pretty whiny lately so I was relieved to have him so agreeable.

But oh Miss. Olivia is driving me completely batty. She is ultra clingy and is waking up about 20 times a night (ok, maybe not 20... but at least 6 or 7 times a night). I foolishly tried to sleep in my own bed last night. I lasted about 45 minutes before I ended up with Olivia for the rest of the night. It just was not worth the effort to go back and forth all night long!!!

Needless to say I'm a wee bit tired.

My kids are freaking hilarious!!!

Pin It Actual conversation around the supper table last night:

Me: Are you excited to go to school tomorrow Aiden?

Aiden: No. The school is hiding men.

Me: WHAT??? ( confused)

Aiden: The school is hiding men! (spoken like he believes they are trying to trick him)

Me: What kind of men?

Aiden: The men are hiding in the costumes. They are lying. They are bad!

Me: WHAT??? Where are they hiding??? (starting to feel slightly alarmed)

Aiden: I don't KNOW where they are but I am GOING to find out!! When I see one with his mouth open I am going to grab his face and look inside and SEE the human! They are tricky.

Owen: the Cat is in a costume and the Dog is in a costume and the Bee is in a costume. BUT I looked at the Bee's wrist and I SAW skin and I KNEW it was a HUMAN!!!

Me: oh (dissolving into laughter) you mean the MASCOTS at the parade!??

Owen: the CAT is a HUMAN! the DOG is a HUMAN! and the BEE is a HUMAN! I KNEW it had a zipper on the back! (spoken emphatically with conviction as though solving a great mystery)

Me: bwahahahahahahahahahahaha oh you guys they are just playing pretend! They aren't lying they are just PRETENDING to be a cat and a dog and a bee! Like Halloween costumes! bwahahahahahahaha (tears running down face from laughing so hard)

Aiden: (looking at me wondering why I am laughing) We KNEW it was a human so we have to get rid of those guys! (very serious)

Me: bwahahahahahahahahaha

boys: leaving table looking at me with disgust for clearly NOT understanding the gravity of the situation

Me, Doug, Grandma: howling with laughter

Grandma: wasn't the parade over a week ago?

Me: yep (still laughing)

Grandma: wow... they've really been thinking this over! We should have explained mascots to them.

Me: (holding sides from laughing) I'll get right on that.
